Miracle of Sodium Bicarbonate in Animal Feed

Sodium bicarbonate contains NaHCO3 which comes from a mineral called Nacholite. This important substance remarkably supports the well being for various animal such as ruminants, poultry, swine, and also aqua culture. Its main role as pH balancer in animal digestive tract has been proven for improving the nutrients absorption, as well as enhancing production and reproduction in livestock.

Ruminants, as we know, have 4 stomach compartments, and the biggest compartment calls rument. Degraded feed in rument happened by Selulolitic, proteolitic, lipolitic and other bacteria. Carbohydrate are degraded and produces volatile fatty acid, acetic acid and propionic acid. These acids would increased rument pH which disturbs rument bacteria’s working capability. Rument bacteria is effectively working at pH 6,5 – 6,8. With pH < 6,2 condition  activity of rument bacteria will be ineffective. In this case, Sodium bicarbonate advantages as an effective buffering agent for improving  pH of rument hold a main role to maintain optimum Ph for rument bacteria activity. At last, those proven researches has led to the fact that Sodium bicarbonate is a capable substance to improve animal production such as milk production.

When poultry experience a heat stress, it might cause panting which triggers the decreasing feeding frequency, due to the drink frequency has escalated caused by evaporation heat in the body. In this panting case, breath frequency is also significantly increased and will disturb acid balance. In addition, CO2 will be exhaled remarkably and at the end, the body weight are decreasing. Sometime it stimulates the deficiency the egg’s production rate. In conclusion, Sodium bicarbonate is a prudent salt replacer for enhancing weight gain, correcting between feed conversion and consumption, and prevent the effect of heat stress. It improve egg quality, strengthen the eggshell durability, Lessen rough eggs, and produce consistent egg weight. It also prevent indigestion problem such as gastric and esophageal ulceration, reduce leg weakness, and improve feed consumption, growth rate, conversion ratio and final life weight in swine.
