The basic chemical styrene monomer is a clear, colourless, oily liquid that is an essential component of materials like expanded polystyrene foam (EPS), acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene (ABS), styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), styrene butadiene latex and reinforced fiberglass composites which are used to make thousands of everyday products.

Styrene should not be confused with polystyrene, which is a manufactured solid plastic with different chemical and physical properties. The styrene used in everyday products is commonly manufactured synthetically from petroleum and natural gas by-products. Styrene also occurs naturally in many commonly consumed foods and beverages, such as coffee, strawberries, and cinnamon. The styrene value chain is shown below.

How is Styrene used ???

Due to the strength, flexibility, light weight, low toxicity, and affordability of products made from styrene, styrene is used to make thousands of consumer products, including food containers,   packaging plastics, medical devices, parts for automobiles, trucks, trains, boats, aircraft and other means of transport, wind-energy parts, fuel cells, construction and water treatment products; building insulations, armour used by military personnel and vehicles, gasoline and other storage tanks, coatings and the backing materials for carpeting and protective sports gear, like bicycle helmets.

  • Wind Turbine Blades

The attributes of styrene-based composites allow wind turbines to be lighter, more efficient and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.

  • Automotive Body Parts

The styrene-derived composite body of cars is lighter than other materials and helps increase the energy efficiency.

  • Bridge Components

The durable and rust-resistant nature of styrene-based composites allows bridges to last much longer without expensive repairs.

  • Energy-efficient Building Insulation

Styrene-based insulation allows for minimal thermal transmission, keeping cool and warm air where we want them to be actionsolar.net. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with fossil-fuel based power generation.

  • Vehicle Tyres

Polymers made from styrene improve durability of rubber tyres and increase fuel-efficiency. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with fossil-fuel based power generation.

  • Food Preserving Containers

Styrene-based plastics can withstand both high and low temperatures, be molded into nearly any desirable form and are inexpensive compared to other food packaging alternatives.

  • Carpet Backing

Latexes made with styrene are flexible and durable, extending the life of carpet and consequently decreasing the cost of maintenance over time.
